Since Eugene's (Josh McDermitt) revealed last season that he's just lying about knowing the cure for the zombie outbreak, a lot of "The Walking Dead" fans have begun to wonder if the show will delve further into whether the epidemic could actually be treated. But in a recent interview, Greg Nicotero suggested that the hit AMC post-apocalyptic drama won't revisit and explore that territory anytime soon.
We've really never established whether or not there is a cure," Nicotero said during a sit-down interview with Melty. "We know that Eugene is lying, but Eugene is lying solely to protect himself. He needed somebody to help him survive in the world. So you know, you never know whether or not there's gonna be any sort of delving into that. I kinda doubt it, because it's really not about the cure."
"If you noticed, we never even talked about how it started," added Nicotero who serves as SFX and makeup special effects artist, director and executive producer on the show. "It's not really important. Because the truth of the matter is it happened, and in this world that's our characters have to deal with."
Speaking at the NAB Show in Las Vegas last month, "The Walking Dead" comic book writer Robert Kirkman said that telling what actually caused the apocalypse is not a plot line that would lead to interesting story arcs.
"It's not the priority in 'Walking Dead,'" Kirkman said (via Adweek). "[And] it's not the priority in [its companion series] 'Fear the Walking Dead.'"
But Kirkman made it clear that he actually knows how everything started. It's just that he doesn't have any plan to share it yet with the viewers.
"I know the origins of the zombie apocalypse [but] I just think it's boring to explain it," he said.
"Every other story deals with that stuff and we're concerned about the heart... [so] I've never bothered to write it down," he added (via Mashable). "Let's hope I don't die."
"The Walking Dead" Season 6 premieres in October on AMC.
