“The Walking Dead” is due to return to our screens on October 11th on AMC (October 12th on FOX in the UK) and judging by the latest trailer, we’re in for a bumpy ride. It appears that with Morgan (Lennie James) arriving at the Alexandria Safe Zone, tensions will be high between him, Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and everyone else.
Someone who always has Rick’s back is Daryl (Norman Reedus). If you don’t read the comic book series which the TV show is based on, you won’t know that Daryl doesn’t exist over there.
That’s right, Daryl Dixon is a character that was created entirely for the TV adaption of the story and we’re sure that many fans are grateful that he does exist. Norman Reedus recently spoke with io9.com and they asked him exactly what it is about Daryl that makes him so beloved by the fans.
“I think he wears his heart on his sleve,” Norman Reedus explained in regards to his on screen character. “I don’t think he’s trying to trick you or fool you.”
He went on to add: “I think he has a certain amount of loyalty to him. He would never cross boundaries with that.” Reedus also spoke about the evolution of Daryl: “Usually, you have a good guy who’s broken, and he goes bad. This guy started off bad, and was a loner and couldn’t relate to anybody, and didn’t want people around him.”
The popular actor confessed that Daryl “had a huge chip on his shoulder” but now it’s slowly being taken away and he has now, thanks to these strangers, has found himself some “self-worth.”
“And I feel like you’re watching this guy sort of become a man that… firmly believes in the things he believes in. He’s becoming admirable. People rely on him, for the first him.”
Reedus also spoke about how the fact that since Daryl isn’t in the comic books, no one really knows what’s coming for him: “I like having the door open wide.”
He continued: “It’s fun. I like it. I’m not the only character on the show that’s not from the comic book, though.”
