It comes during the iconic Issue 100 of the comic book. The villainous Negan makes his debut by driving his trusty baseball bat named Lucille through Glenn's head. Not only is it a violent way for one of the show's franchise's characters to die. But it laid down a clear statement that no character is safe.
"The Walking Dead" showrunners haven't been shy about teasing Glenn's comic book death. The former pizza boy nearly got his head taken out by a bat at Terminus during "The Walking Dead" Season 5 premiere. Later, in the midseason premiere, Glenn could be seen walking around with a Louisville Slugger.
But the teasing is over. Season 6 is shaping up to feature the point where the comic book's most significant death crosses over into the TV series.
Recent rumors suggest AMC is in the process of casting Negan, as the show's timeline moves closer to Issue 100 of the comic. In a recent interview with the New York Daily News, actor Steven Yeun, who plans Glenn, admitted he was uncertain about his character's future.
"Yes, I'm worried about Glenn," Yeun said. "But we're still in the middle of filming. There's still a lot of story to tell, and a lot of different stories to tell from the graphic novels."
It's almost as if Yeun has come to terms with Glenn's inevitable demise. However, at this point, it all seems a bit too obvious.
Heading into Season 6, "The Walking Dead" has become a production that takes place under a cloud of spoilers (some real, some fake). There are even social media pages where fans camp out outside of filming locations. Negan has yet to be spotted. But rest assured – he's coming. So what does that mean for Glenn?
Part of me wishes the show would trick everyone and, perhaps, have Negan off another character instead of Glenn. But that would deprive hardcore fans of the comic book moment we've long been waiting for.
If Glenn does meet his demise it won't be until the end of Season 6, considering Negan's casting has yet to be confirmed. But Maggie will more than likely lose her lover before Season 6 comes to a close.
